I just got of the phone with my salesman and Monday morning my XRF scanner will be delivered. If anyone else ever decides to buy one be prepared to wait. It's been a long wait, a lot of paperwork, and a lot of cash involved to get this new toy. I'm looking forward to scanning my counterfeit coins to see what they are made of.

Dabbling in a small coin/jewelry shop. I live in a small town and there is literally nothing here but bars. If people want anything it's roughly a half hour drive to anywhere decent to buy stuff. Trying to put a little life back into the town. I know people will be bringing in scrap to sell so I might as well have every tool available to me at my disposal. stones and acid are decent, but why not bite the bullet and get the right tool for the job. Plus I can write the majority of it off, and I really want one. This is the one I ordered. http://www.thermoscientific.com/en/...nalyzer.htmlThey build them to order after going through a crazy credit check. You also need to fill out a ton of paperwork and contact the state radiation control department to get a license and have a "safe" area for storage. It really wasn't what I was expecting when I decided I wanted one. I thought I could just call and say send me one and 2 days later it would be here. I've done my part now it needs to show up so I can "play" with my new toy.

XRF scanners are very useful for ancient coins.
For example, if you have a range of Roman imperial silver coins 14 BC to the reign of Constantine the Great it is possible to trace the fall of the Roman Empire using the progressive debasemnet of the silver currency.
The best instrument for measuring the silver purity is an XRF instrument. The purity if silver in the coinage is graphed against the date when each coin was struck.

I don't collect ancients, but that's pretty interesting. Thousands of years after the fact you can scan a coin and see the decline.
For my personal use the scanning of counterfeit coins is going to be exciting. Some I have are very, very convincing fakes. It would be nice to know what they actually used for the metal. I read a book on counterfeiting an one of the things talked about was the buying of old coins and melting them to produce a new planchet of the correct material for striking the counterfeit. It would be interesting if that was actually done by some people.

Quote: Holy heck. I want one but cant justify that expense. More info please If you break it down into a lease with the option to purchase for $1 after the term is up, It comes out to a little under $350 a month. I know that's a car payment, but like the old saying goes "it takes money to make money". For me to personally buy it that would have been a divorce, but as a business expense you can take the write off and have a cool toy to boot. I'm kind of excited for the summer. There are tons of garage/estate sales. It will be fun to walk around scanning the jewelry and knowing for sure what it is. I have seen necklaces for instance (from Walmart especially) having a tag stamped 14k. A lot of people would assume the entire necklace is 14k, but in truth the only part that is gold is that little tag. The rest of the necklace is plated. Also with dealing with someone who may want to sell they may see a scratch test as ruining their item. With the scanner you push a button and show them the screen the item never leaves their sight (so they can't claim you switched it) and there is no "damage" or denying what the item is. I may even just put up an offer to scan stuff for people just to play with it. The ancient coin talked about earlier there may be people who would like to know what they have. A couple of bucks to push a button and print out an analysis for them, it's win win.
