I have a couple of nickels and a few other coins that have toning (?). What causes this and does it make them more valuable? I understand the nickel is not in very good shape and it is very difficult to take a picture to get the true beauty of the coloring. Let me know your thoughts please.

Lots and lots and lots of things cause coins to tone differently. Being left out in the sun, being exposed to certain chemicals, even something as simple as wrapping a coin in some tissue. If the tissue has chemicals in it then over time they will react with the coin and cause it to tone.

Your guess would be as good as mine :D

Welcome to the CCF, DonnaBB. Toning on high grade coins can have a positive or negative impact on a coin. There are collectors who seek out multi-colored specimens for their collections. They will particularly relish bulls-eye toning an toning that creates a cameo effect. On the other hand, uncirculated or proof coins bearing splotchy or speckled toning will be adversely valued.Toning on lower grade coins isn't much prized. Oftentimes it was precipitated by long time storage in older coin albums and/or envelopes that had sulfur content.

To find out more about it, do a search on "toning" on this website and read some prior threads. There's a wealth of information here!

This is unusual in appearance for the grade, though long-term storage in a kraft envelope could produce this look, I suppose. Obverse scar leaves it worth very little, however.

Given that the reverse color of the posted coin is so saturated, I'd suspect it was housed in an early folder or coin board. That said, Coinfrog, the OP's question was more general, it seems and not simply about the posted example.
