I don't think the acid would be only at opposite ends of the coin.

Does look like acid etched the surface. Perhaps it was copper plated prior to the acid dunk. I'm guessing its a science experiment gone bad.

It's definitely been abused Post Strike.
It can't be missing a clad layer because nickels, don't have layers. They are the same CuNi alloy all the way through.

Yes, I think it is as Rackster suggested. It must have been copper plated. They must have done that in science class; I was at the beach.

It could have been used in an electroplating experiment that went wrong. Maybe it was the anode or cathode in an experiment with electrolysis and some Copper present in the solution began to bond on the surface of the Nickel as the Nickel was being ate away by the reaction.
