I've been having a bit of trouble while metal detecting on the beach. If anyone has tips on where to hunt on beaches that would be great. I would also appreciate any tips on digging up finds, especially in water where the holes fill up just as fast as your digging.

Hi Kenny

I have very little experiance detecting the beach we don't have many here in the desert ,but I have been a few times.

I did ok along the erosion point and out from that to the low tide line.where ever people spread their towels or set their chairs for fishing ,volleyball nets basically the most active areas of the beach.

to dig the finds I used a home made sand scoop ,,I made it from a 6 inch PVC pipe section about 10 inches long ,I attached a handle with small bolts and nuts ,, and drilled 1/4 inch holes in a cap for the pipe and along the sides to about 1 inch from the top I cut the top at an angle probably a 22.5 degree angle to make it easier to dig with .

Ok, I don't have a sand scoop. I'm sure it would be a good idea to get one. I think I'll just use a strainer for the time being and see how it works.

I went out today during low tide and foudn very little. I think I'm going to go out again tomorrow and check the volleyball courts and more populated areas.

Thanks for the advice

If your detector is submersible, be sure to check the water between knee deep and waist deep.

That's where most bathers spend the most time and where the skin prunes and the rings come off.

That's also the area where children (with change in their suit pockets) spend the most time.

Kenny some good advise here from the others. There are a few places I alway check at the beach. Volleyball court, restroom/changing areas, playground and sunbathing areas.

People usually take off their jewelry and coins from their pockets when changing. So those restroom/changing areas a great. Volleyball court have been a long time favorite area for a lot of hunters. Playgrounds at the beach usually produce coins and jewelry and its quick to hunt.

But those beach towel areas offer up a lot of everything when those beaches get packed. People pick up their towels to shake off them sand forgetting about change and jewelry.

I found a 3.7 ounce Italian 925 silver necklace within 15 minutes of my first time out when we moved to the coast. Thought it was a dog choke chain and tossed it in my trash bag. I pulled it out to show my buddy the 3rd choke chain of the year. He sid thats no dog chain it has clasp on it. Sure enough..cha ching.

You should have a ton of people on your beaches down there all year round. Just watch where people seem to concentrate on the beach and hit em hard. Also check around and under piers if you can. They produce a lot of good finds also. Especially under shops and resturant areas.

Metalman, any chance you could post a pic of your homemade scoop?
I can't believe the prices on those long handled scoops. I've been thinking of making one myself.

Hi deadmunny

Im afraid the scoop has gone the way of the condor,, when I moved to the desert it was donated to an old MDing buddy I left behind in Oregon .

when I built mine I think it cost me a whopping 6.00 in materials and a couple of hours of free time to build .

Take a trip to your local hardware store ,,when you see the PVC pipe and end caps I think the design will become clear ,,if you need any help just let me know I will do what I can .

By the way ,,I discovered after building mine that leach field pipe already has holes drilled in it !

Metalman, does your homemade scoop work well in both dry and wet sand?
