I have two coins where the beak of the bird looks doubled on top. The first picture is one coin. The second coin is in the second and third pictures using different lighting. I welcome your feedback. :)

to CCF. No pro here but looks like a worn die issue to me.

Thank you for welcoming me to the community. :) Do worn dies often have extra metal? I notice a lot of extra metal randomly all over the newer state park quarters. Thanks!

Weight it. It should be normal. No "extra" metal just pushed up a bit.

There is not extra metal. The planchet only weighs so much. So the weight is not increased. The shape of the design may be altered because of die wear. So there is no extra metal. The shape is enlarged a bit because of the die enlargement. The die wear usually shows in the direction of the closest rim. Thus the area between the bill on the bird is affected in that direction. on other areas of the coin the direction maybe to the right side of the devices on the right side of the coin or to the left on the devices facing that area.

Thank you. Your explanation and picture were very informative.

Is this sometimes referred to " Machine Doubling" too?

Actually machine doubling/damage happens during the strike. The movement/bounce of the die alters the strike of the coin.

Mchine damage can appear different from coin to coin.

On die wear they will look the same strike to strike, getting worse as the die ages even more.

Neither one increase value for the coin. (I view them as a negative myself) I prefer coins from fresh dies any day.
