Hi All,

I'm hoping this is the appropriate forum for this question...

I am looking for information/insight on counterfeit US fractional paper.

If anyone has insight on if there is actually a market for it? Any legalities involved (has it been demonitized, etc)?

I ran into a gentleman who was not attempting to sell it as anything other than counterfeit (was very upfront), and I was curious if the counterfeit notes/paper held/had any actual value (a market); and if there were US Treasury/US Postal Service rules/laws applying to this?

I am a 'coin guy', as it were, and I very admittedly know little to nothing about fractional.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

As long as the person is not attempting to pass it off as legit, there shouldn't be an issue with selling it. As far as having a market, of course there is a market. I actually don't have a fractional in my black cabinet, but would love to have one.

Could you get pictures of the note?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. No, I didn't take a photo. It was a lot. And the discussion was limited. The current owner, however, will be back; and I let him know that I wanted to research this further before anymore discussion occurred. I couldn't find any prices realized for counterfeit fractional on ebay to reference (or any quick searches of private listing pages) - So that is why (including my very limited knowledge) I hesitated and sought qualified input here on CCF.

Thank you again.

Contemporary counterfeits from that era are collectible and have value that is determined between the buyer and seller. As far as I know, there is no standard pricing references. Other than occasional auction sales they usually are just traded between buyers and sellers at shows.

There have been some sold recently on ebay and right now there is an auction for one. Heritage has also sold a few. In the end it's all what you are willing to spend on it as there really isn't a retail type price for them.

...information/insight on counterfeit US fractional paper.

I was never into frac. currency that much until I grabbed a bunch at an auction a while back.

Then just by chance my local coin club put on a small monthly auction where I won a great book on this subject:

'A Collector's Guide to Postage & Fractional Currency' by Robert J. Kravitz. It's about a 150 page book with superb color photos. http://www.collectons.com has it for $ 44.49 + S/H in their currency section.

After reading through it I found several tips on counterfeits and varieties/errors: topics that are my true interests when dealing with coins.

Here are a few paraphrased tips from the book:

1) If the currency smells like bleach(used for post mint processing), stay away. A simple sniff test is adequate and recommended if a frac. note looks too good.

2) A pressed note(to diminish the creases) lowers the value of any paper note significantly. Hold the bill at a 45 degree angle to a light and search for either shiny lines or cast shadows: both indicative of pressing.

3) Then place the currency on a flat surface and observe if the ends curl up. Curling signifies processing: a bad thing.

The book relays some of the author's conquests(paying next to nothing for valuable specimens) when cherry picking at coin shops and shows. Many owners of this paper have no clue of hidden treasures and increased monetary value contained therein since they've never taken the time to read a book like this.

fyi,
