Hi All,

I hope I am posting this in the right place. Recently, I restarted my childhood coin hobby. I keep it simple and after completing the 64-86 JFK half-dollar folder, I started on books two and three. You really don't see Kennedy halves much in general circulation. The few banks I ask say they don't receive half dollar rolls.

So, am I asking the wrong banks? Or is the only option to keep going to the local coin shop and buying each one at $3-4 a pop?

If you can find a bank that will order you a box of $500 in halves you should be able to fill all of the holes from 1988 to 2001 in one box. The 1987 only came in mint sets as well as the 2002 to date.

I have more trouble finding 1985 and 1986 than I do the 2002 and later NIFC. One time while picking up my boxes of halves at the bank the woman next to me mentioned she tried finding 1986 half dollars for some sort of wedding anniversary party and she couldn't find any.

Banks can order boxes of halves from the FED, but many will not unless you are on very good terms with the manager. I got a few boxes a number of years back, and I finished the whole set 1971-2001 on my first box, save for the 1987-P and the 1978-D.

A viable option if you don't want to bother with $480 in halves you don't want is to just buy mint sets on ebay. 1986-1998 can be had for $2-4 each, if you are willing to get a 1996 set with the W dime removed. 1999-2001 are more expensive on account of the Statehood Quarters and the $1 coins.

Thanks for the advice - I was actually thinking of going the ebay/proof set route. I notice some are incomplete and can be had for short money. For me it has be free shipping for it to work dollar-wise. I also will try chatting up my favorite female teller.."if you happen to get any half dollars, would you mind holding them for me?" ha ha..

and I have bought singles from Dave Enders? daves collectible coins. You might try there as he sometimes has AU ones for much less than the BU priced ones. Once you find what you can in the wild for face value that is. Good luck!

to the Community!

Keep working the banks. Failing that, I would recommend a coin show where you will have multiple dealers competing.

Another suggestion.

Once you get 250 posts here on CCF, you can buy, sell
and trade coins.

Once you get the required post, there may be members
that will help you find the coins you need.

Coinfusion, Jbuck, and GR58, Thanks for your suggestions. I have bought from Dave Enders in the past so I took your advice and picked up a few 1986 onward AU Kennedys for <$2.00 each.

Like someone else mentioned, find a bank that can order boxes. It is not difficult.
They are bought locally from couriers like Brinks, Garda, Loomis etc.

I've done this for years and have found numerous NIFC and clad proof Kennedys. I was also able to find the 1970 D and S my first year assembling a collection, back about 2012.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72
