I have heard Anacs has really varied in constancy over the years. I've also seen various anacs labels (yellow, blue, white). Which time period (indicated by grading label) was during a time when they had pickier grades (ex: if you buy a MS coin, it's not going to lose 2 or 3 grades if resubmitted to PCGS)? Thanks!

Good question but I think something like this is going to be difficult to nail down just because of the number of graders and their distinct subjectivity in the grading process.
It's also very dependent upon which type of coin is being graded and its complexity of design etc.

In order from best to worst as far as strictness/consistency:
1. White label (also known as small holders) 2. Yellow label (currently being used) 3. Blue label (regarded as the least desirable)

I agree with both the posts above by BH1964 & mdpmedia. You have to evaluate each coin in a ANACS holder and determine the likelihood of the coin to cross at the same grade. If you check the PCGS web site, the crossover rate for NGC, ANACS & ICG is 40%. I would think that NGC would have a higher percentage of crossovers, so the other two companies would have a lower percentage.

The sequence was the older white holders (but that covers ownership by both ANA and Amos Press), then Blue and finally Yellow. Within each of those ownerships, standards changed as the market changed. And then tightened at several points as various owners struggled to improve ANACS' reputation. In general, any coins that have been available in the market have been picked over for upgrades MANY times as each wave of gradeflation has hit. If it's a coin that's been tucked away for 25 years, maybe...

I can't answer that because I don't really know. I would say "generally accepted" and it's been my experience that the small, white holders are best and blue holders are worst. As always YMMV. P.S. Many recently graded coins in yellow holders are conservatively graded perhaps in an effort to regain market confidence and standing.

The data is not published. It's both trade secret AND wasn't always transfered with the various sales.
That's ONE reason why the current owners won't guarantee coins from prior owners. They will reholder blue label back in blue, but that's all. If you want yellow, that's a regrade.

That's good information. I included a couple of SLQs in the small white 'soap bar' holders with my latest submission to ANACS. I would have kept them in the old holders if they weren't so banged up. It'll be interesting to see what they do with them. I cracked a few Morgan dollars out of those same small holders a while back and NGC graded them exactly the same.

I recently talked with several dealers about this same topic. The consensus was old small white holders they trust the grades. The newer holders they knock at least 2 grades from what is on the label. From the discussion they have a very hard time reselling anything in an ANACS holder, so they crack them and sell them raw or have to get them regraded.
