Good afternoon everyone. I hope this is posted in the correct area. I am new and appreciate any direction you may provide.

I have been trying to figure out what to do with this coin. I have coins that I would like to get rid of and have researched everything I have but I am having a very hard time with this one. While I have found information on this coin, I cannot find anything telling me why it has "72" on the front of the coin. I have not cleaned this coin so it it rather dirty. I hope you can see in the pictures.

If anyone out there knows anything at all or can point me in the right direction to continue my research, I would greatly appreciate it.

~Best~
Serena (sjwein)

It's a counterstamp, but it's not likely you'll find out why someone did that. Lots of counterstamps are documented, but even more aren't; there's often just no way to find out why someone punched something onto a coin. As for cleaning it, don't, it's fine as it is.

Chequer,

Thank you so much for the fast response! I appreciate it. I am guessing this coin is not too valuable? Just making sure before I get rid of them.

Before you sell it for bullion, contact Coin Cabinet in Moncton N.B. they are experts in the old counrterstamp token coins, the numbers look old style who knows could be some rare stamp. Let us know if it's turns out to be rare and valuable.

There are definitely counterstamp collectors, but unless identified, this won't likely add value. Still, someone will want it. I can't comment on value though. Brian or Jason at the Coin Cabinet are good people to ask: coincabinet.ca

All,

Jason at the Coin Cabinet was GREAT! I learned the coin is worth about $30 or $10 if I sell it to a shop.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi AgCoinAu-

I emailed pictures of the coin to Jason at the Coin Cabinet. I did not get any specific information on the stamp. I am guessing there are no records of what significance the stamp has. :)
