I found a Ferruginous Hawk specimen dollar in my change today. Some person must have broken up the set and thrown it into regular circulation.

It's slightly dinged up, but in not too bad condition.

I'm quite excited.

Nice find.
Never known anyone to get a Specimen Set Dollar in their change.
A real keeper.

I wonder why the specimen coins have no real following? We pay up to 5X spot for silver coins, so metal content doesn't seem to matter. I find it a very curious matter.

I've never found anything in circulation change beyond circulation change. Upon closer inspection, it has more dings than my eyes initially saw. Oh well. I'm still keeping it and still think it's a great find all things considered.

I should have gone back to the store to see if they had any other coins of the set in their register.
Rest in Peace

In my experience, it's likely a gift to a child...who eventually needed some extra cash, and figured out how to open the case. (experience with my daughter and a Christmas set - she was 8 at the time)

In my experience they do have a following; it's just smaller than for circulation coins. However, the bird loonies and young wildlife toonies in particular keep their value much better than the modern silver NCLT.
