Hey all..

I found this coin in a roll of halves from the bank. What's going on with it? It is gold and I am thinking plated? Also what is going on with the imprints of dates on the obverse? Please let me know! Thank you!

Yep it's plated. A lot of people like counterstamp coins even if it is a modern one. I'd hold on to it just as a curiosity, Kinda nice too that ya found it in circulation

I hate it when I find one if those! I have several quarters that have been plated. To me, that takes a perfectly good coin, ( that might even have a nice error), and make nothing more than another "2-but" piece out of it. I feel the same way when I find, or get one of the "painted, or "Halo" type Silver Eagles. Toss 'em into the junk box, as "melt" value.

I have a half dozen of those around here. It is plated outside the mint as a novelty. It is obviously for the 20th anniversary of something. I wish I knew what:-) It has no numismatic value, but it is an interesting piece. If I had to guess, since Kennedy was elected in 1960 (inaugarated 1961), it is probably a novelty item for the 20th year anniversary of his election. They are really quite common.

I was wondering what those were. I have two of 'em dated 1983.

I enlarged the pictures. If you can take a picture of the dates from another angle with the light source more from the top or add another light source to the one you're using, it would help. Right now, the single light source on the image causes too much reflection to the bottom of the dates.

The 1983 date punched in would probably signify the 20th anniversary of his assasination. They were done outside of the mint in connection with other "novelty" type items pertaining to Kennedy.
