I was searching through a BU roll of 1968-S LMC I recently acquired and discovered this awesome little gem!

Are my tired eyes deceiving me, or does this appear to be an RPM with a huge spread to the NW with almost complete separation between the two?

I've looked at several of the main variety websites and cannot find anything even remotely similar for this date.

What do you guys think?

Interesting. I don't know what it could be besides an RPM.

I see MD on the date and the mint mark . (on the right side) The rest is die flow and die scratches.

Looks like a well shaped die scratch to me.

You're right, it does look almost exactly like the shape of the S MM. I'm inclined to trust coop on this one, though.

Yes, that is the area I was referring to.
Coin in hand, it appears to be more than a well shaped die scratch.
Just because it's not a known RPM, doesn't automatically rule out the possibility of it being a genuine RPM does it?

That would make the larger than a mint mark punch. It is a die scratch (top line) die flow lines the other lines, and the mark on the inside of the upper loop is a damaged punch issue on the mint mark. (you can see this on a lot of 1968-D cents mint marks)
