Of the dollars minted in 18th Century and very early years of 19th Century what are the key things to look for as far as condition. I am not talking about coins minted before 1804 and not absurd rarities. Just to own one of these coins would be a dream. I see pictures of Flowing Hair dollar and I know I am looking at a coin Jefferson or Adams might have touched.

Most of these have been cleaned at one time or another, I'd go after one that has decent surfaces meaning it hasn't been polished, wiped, dipped to death.

There will be areas of weakness that look like wear but are strike related. You learn the difference by looking at high quality images like those at Heritage Auctions.

If varieties tickle your fancy then this link will be of interest http://www.earlydollars.org/wizardhome.htm

All those types are fantastic. Are these coins usually graded and slabbed or sold raw? I would not be able to tell is these old coins had been polished, wiped or dipped since I am sure they are all pretty toned. I will check out HA for examples. Have you ever bought anything via HA?

You do realize all Flowing Hair coinage was minted prior to 1804 right?

Yes, I have read that the 1804 dollar was actually minted in 1830 something. I want a nice Flowing Hair dollar just to look at it in wonder. Flowing Hair was minted in 18th Century as in 1795 etc.

I think what Terry meant to say in his original post was that he is talking about coins minted before 1804.

Gotcha. Sometimes lower grade Flowing Hair Half Dollars go for reasonable prices. This one is plugged and went for $646: http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-...Lot=1x=0&y=0

Here's a problem-free G06 that cost $881: http://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-...Lot=1x=0&y=0

None are cheap but when you get to the Dollars finding anything under $1,000 will be very tough.

Terry I have won auctions with Heritage in the past, coin wise none of my purchases exceeded $250. I would have no problem bidding and winning a higher valued coin from there.
