At the time of this post, ths coin was priced at $40.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/31147848835...RK:MEBIDX:IT

What do you think about ths one? I have recently purchased a couple of coins in this series but I don't have this type yet. Price-wise, I am looking at an F12 because the price really jumps after that. NumisMedia lists an F12 at $55 while the PCGS online guide lists it at $95.

So what do you think about grade and price? Thoughts?

By the way, what are the different abbreviations for Seated Liberty quarter and Standing Liberty quarter, or is that liberty Standing quarter?

Thanks

I agree with the grade. Seems like a solid coin without any detractors. I think the pictures are dark, so the coin is probably a little brighter than this.

Are you buying this for your collection and to keep for a while or is the ability to resell a high priority?

First thought is it looks overgraded and should be a VG10 but that's subjective as you know. As an F12 it's worth $65 for sure.

These early date Liberty Seated quarters (LSQ) bring decent money even in lower grades. SLQ should be used for Standing Liberty quarters but the letters get used both ways. Technically Seated coinage should be stated as Liberty Seated...and not Seated Liberty but I digress.

At the current bid of $40 that coin looks quite attractive in more ways than one.

Collects82- the coin is for my collection to be passed on to my son, who is 5. Hopefully, we'll have it for some time.

Looks like it would be a great pick up to sock away for 20 years or so. I have been doing the same thing since my son was young but if I had to do it over again I would have made different choices. This coin looks like a good choice.

Its Liberty Seated coinage - in this case, LSQ. Great looking quarter. My guess is it hammers for around $65 to $70.

Didn't get it. I agree with BH1964 that it looked a little over graded, so I didn't want to bid high. dsfreeworld: that was a pretty close call on the sale price. Will keep looking. The search continues.

Still a nice example, tough to find clean in a lower grade.

Just for the record the Heritage Value Index for this 1839 SLQ w/o drapery in F-12 is $ 55 on the high end. This factors in the cost of the slab.

But to really get down to the bottom line the Heritage 17.5% buyer's fee should be subtracted from the $ 55 arriving at $ 46 for an optimum target purchase price.

At a $ 75 buy price the presence of any meat left on the bone for profit would kill this deal notably for any buyer attempting to quickly resell it.

IMO

its not a "flip" coin. It's a grade rarity even if over-graded a tad. The $75 is right on the money considering you just don't see them problem free in that range. Forget HA value index, forget Numismedia. A coin is worth what someone is willing to pay.

I agree that $75 is a decent price for this coin which is not often seen problem-free. I once paid more for a higher-grade raw piece which showed problems in-hand. I returned that one and would much rather have acquired this PCGS piece.

Good luck Johnny676767 on the continuing search!
