Hello all, I am considering the purchase of this item but wanted to see if anyone recognized it. I understand that it is gold, weighs 16 grams, and was found near Odessa, Ukrane but looks to be of Greek origin. Any ideas?    *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** |

Mods should probably move this over to the Ancients forum--they would be able to weigh in much better than those that frequent this forum.
That said, something about this does not sit right with me. I have never seen this (deity?) before anywhere, and I suspect it would not be difficult at all to make a fantasy coin of this type.
Does the density check out as gold or electrum?

Funny, I couldn't even find the ancients forum or I would have posted it there. I don't have it in hand so I can't say if it is really gold or electrum, but the seller lists it as electrum.

Likely a modern reproduction. If authentic, this would be worth a small fortune as it is quite rare. It purports to be an electrum stater of Kyzikos/Cyzicus, Mysia from 500 - 475 BC. Obv: Man headed monster in a running or kneeling posture left, perhaps "Phobos" or "Daimon", head to right, grasping tunny fish in his right hand. Rev:Quadripartite incuse square. As Bob stated a very rare coin type and odd to see it not round, however the weight is right and IMO the details look genuine. What is the seller asking for it? I would want it checked out by an expert and certified before I would even consider spending any money on it.

If it is the real deal it certainly has been through the wars... I wonder what could have happened to the poor thing. Certainly an interesting item though... let us know what transpires :)

Everything about this looks authentic despite the rectangular appearance. However, if the seller has it listed at a bargain basement price, beware! However it is priced, make sure you get it "on extension", i.e. make sure you can get a return of the purchase price if a bad opinion is received after having it expertized. How well do you know the seller? I would take it to Harlan Berk since he has handled lots of material like this and would know. In Europe there are others just as qualified, and some list members over there can name names.

Funny, I couldn't even find the ancients forum or I would have posted it there.They hide our group under the back stairs. We're hard to find.  Seriously though, get it checked thoroughly before you purchase and make sure the seller has been in the business a very long time and has an ironclad return policy. Counterfeits are a problem with ancients, especially from Eastern Europe and because of that who you buy from is almost as important as what you are buying. That said there are quite a few established dealers who keep us ancient collectors broke. That's a beautiful piece. Hope it's real.

This is the same coin posted back in 2015 being offered for sale. I don't know what to think about it, outwardly it looks genuine. But the counterfeiters have become so good it's difficult to say for sure without the coin being tested and certified by an expert.

@kost, this is an interesting find with your metal detector. While I normally am not a big fan of having coins slabbed, have you considered getting a professional opinion on it and having it authenticated?

Maybe you should contact Odessa archaeological museum and let them have a look at it and record where you apparently found it.  I personally have no problem investing a couple of hundred pounds in verifying that what I have is indeed worth XXXX as has been shown by other members. You can afford a metal detector, camera and computer so money clearly isn't the issue. Your reluctance in providing any " proof " or qualified " opinion " leaves me doubting the authenticity of what you are trying to sell, 16 months is more than enough time to get it authenticated. Not an expert on type, just giving my 2p worth based on what I am reading and seeing  No point tiptoeing around his posts, time to cut to the chase  |
