Picked this 1900 Lafayette dollar up. Sure hope it is genuine, it looked genuine to me, but I am not good at that and it is my weakest area of expertise.

Thanks-- this is the best pic I can do until I get home to a real computer.

Crazyglue, would you mind if I split this out into its own topic for more attention?

crazyglue,
I'm concerned, your coin looks similar to other reproductions I've seen. I'm sure the guys in the U.S Commemorative Coins sub-forum can tell you exactly what you have.

It's appearance is troublesome. It looks like a cast copy.

I went ahead and split this out on its own.

Cast copy, I'd say. More detailed photos would help, but from the "lumpy" portraits, thick letters, and poor denticles it doesn't look good.

Thanks again. These are the best photos I can do until I have it in hand. It is being shipped. I wasn't as concerned as I should have been because they had other classic commemorative for sale as well-- none really more than $50 in value, in about the same shape. I thought, "surely no one would make forgeries of a bunch of esoteric classic commemorates that they can't sell for more than $50." I might be wrong on that. This was the only coin selling worth anything going to that much trouble for such a small market.

Yep the reverse seals the deal for me. 100% fake.

Everything is being counterfeited today, I've seen fakes where the original would retail for under $5. There is some fake junk silver out there too apparently. Scary stuff for sure.

Yeah, well I guess there were some clues, like middle of the night auction, low feedback, etc. I'm pretty sure I will get my money back when in hand...not as described, fake, I will open a return, he won't respond, ebay will step in, etc. Still, bummer.

I'm 100% confident that is a very poor counterfeit. Hopeful that get your money back.
