A friend emailed me these pictures of a coin and wanted some info. From what I can tell it's probably a commemorative issue of an old german coin, probably issued in the 80's, and probably silver plated. I found a few pics on the net of similar 2 mark and 5 mark coins but couldn't find any with the 50 mark denomination like this one. Any insight would be appreciated. Sorry for the bad pics he doesn't know how to take photos of coins very well!

Now I'm thinking maybe the "50" may actually mean 50 years, and not 50 marks. So maybe issued in 1984?

The only real coins issued with this design (Von Hindenburg obverse) were 2 and 5 Reichmark coins with diameters of 25mm and 29mm respectively. Your coin is a fantasy issue and thus, was never issued by any monetary issuing authority. It's most likely very large, 40mm in diameter, considering the high denomination.

Yes, I guess it is a fantasy issue and the design copies the original circulating coins.

One thing that would say that it is unlikely to be from the 80s is because it is highly doubtful that anyone in both Germanies would be willing to release a coin along with a Nazi insignia on it 1945 going forward.

I found similar ones on ebay that are reproductions of the 2 and 5 mark coins, some that are gold plated, or claim to be. And they are large 30mm coins, 4mm thick... The one did say it was issued in the 80's... so if Germany didn't make these, who did I wonder?
