This seems likely to have been nailed up on the jamb of or above a doorway (a practice supposed to bring good luck to a habitation, or at least ward off evil). I see this more often with British coinage than with any other. Many times, the nail is driven right through the center, but in this case, it was done rather more elegantly, apparently with the King's visage facing outwards. Another point of interest is that although the coin itself is not too old, the nail used was evidently an older square cross section type.

I did not know that -- about the good luck/ warding off evil.

Thanks for sharing that bit of information.

I like that coin. I am fond of coins that show a bit of history.

I like finding holed coins from the square nails in junk bins and I know I'm not the only one.
