This seems likely to have been nailed up on the jamb of or above a doorway (a practice supposed to bring good luck to a habitation, or at least ward off evil). I see this more often with British coinage than with any other. Many times, the nail is driven right through the center, but in this case, it was done rather more elegantly, apparently with the King's visage facing outwards. Another point of interest is that although the coin itself is not too old, the nail used was evidently an older square cross section type.
