I want to get the Overton book for early half dollars. Is there a specific edition that I should be looking for? When I purchased my Penny Whimsey for large cents I ended up with an newer reprint and pics are not so great. So want to make sure I look for a better printing of the Overtons work.

The fourth edition is usually described as being less desirable than the third edition. There is a fifth edition out now but I have not heard may reviews on it so I don't know how it compares.

I have the fifth edition, first printing, and it is absolutely marvelous. It makes identification a breeze. If you identify just 10 or 20 coins with this book you will already know most of what you need to know.
If it's your first use of the Overton/Parsley books, then it might take a bit to learn the abbreviations and terminology. But after that, you can pick up the book any time you find a new half you want to check, and it's really only a matter of a minute or two to narrow down which one it is.
There are a few exceptions, of course, but not many. Great photos.

If you're after a copy of the 3rd edition (1990) there are some affordable examples for sale: http://www.alibris.com/booksearch?k...=0&hs=SubmitI believe DoubleEagle20 has the 5th edition mentioned, you might ask him what he thinks of it. Wizard, Rich Uhrich, Brooklyn Gallery all have the 5th edition for sale on their sites.

Overton 5th edition is same as United States Large Cents By William C. Noyes, just an excellent book. Send me a PM with your address.

Thanks for all of your replies. Can anyone tell me the publishing years for the 3rd and 5th edition? I have found a revised, enlarged; earlier edition 1964. edition (January 1, 1967). Not sure which number this would be.

Thanks for posting this thread .... I am not sure why I have not picked up this book before now. Pretty sure it will be on my next Wizard order. I did pick up a different book on early half dollars a couple years ago. It is a nice book, but I found it hard to identify Overton numbers, with that book. Sounds like this 5th edition will be much better.

Currently this book + a 20th CQR are on my "want list", but never seem to show up.
