My wife brought home some coins she found in the till today; - 3 x Bradman 2001 20¢
- WA and NSW (really nice) CoF 20¢
- 1952 Florin probably around VF
I think I mentioned it in a different thread {when I found NZ florin} but how long is it since anyone has seen a florin in circulation? This is the first we have sighted for quite some years. Jeff

Great finds.
Finding a florin is very unusual and the Bradmans are getting scarce too.

When I had a TAB agency from 1979 - 1985, there was a lovely little old lady that used to have $1 worth of bets & nearly always paid with 5 florins. None of them were anything special. She was just getting rid of them. She'd let her head go at Melbourne Cup time & have $2 worth. Those are the last ones I've taken from circulation.

Can you still have a bet as small as $1 at a TAB now?

I haven't been in a TAB for over 20 years, so I'm not sure how much bets are now. Back then doubles & trebles were 50¢ each, and you could put 50¢ on for either win/place. I believe that minimum win/place bets now are $1.

I do happen to have quite a few florins, a couple dozen that came from that lady. I did explain to her that they might be worth a bit more than 20¢, but she had tried to sell them to a dealer & was only offered a tiny bit more than FV, so she knocked the offer back. They were mostly 1946 & 1947. She only came in 3 or 4 times.
I think she preferred to spend them & see the look of surprise on the face of the person when she handed them over. She was a bit of a card & always had a joke to tell.

If my wife can find one in the till at work you never know when one might come over the counter at a Maccas. Keep your fingers crossed.

I received a 1951 Florin in the mail just yesterday.
It was a gift from Muckeye, and most appreciated.

I'm curious.
Now that Australia is on the decimal system, how much is a Florin worth on those rare occasions when one is used for a business transaction?

Actually two shillings (24 pence) and was equivalent to 20 cents at decimal changeover. At 50% silver (92.5% for some commemoratives) silver value is just over $3 and lowest catalogue value for worst grade is $4. So, don't spend any -send them all to me and I will give you $1 each -thats 400% profit for you.
That sounds fair; doesn't it?

I have found the odd florin in circulation coins as well but very rarely. Two Australian a 1947 and a 1951 (I think) and three New Zealand florins in the last year or so.
