I know proof 1970 S nickels had two varieties, the narrow/thin S and fat/blob S. These are MS nickels with two different style mintmarks. Did MS nickels have two varieties of mintmark, or is one an error? If not an error, is one style worth more than the other? Thank you for your help. :)

Thin or the more common S I see

Fat or "blob" S

1970-S-Nickel-MS-Mintmark-StyleS

1970-S-Nickel-MS-Mintmark-StyleS

Thin S coin over Fat S coin

If the same style of punch was used, different things can alter the mint mark.
1. A very slight tap of the punch can rotate the punch a bit.
2. The depth can be slightly different and make the mint mark deeper into the die and make it wider than others used with the same punch.
3. Circulation can alter the shape by a flattening down of the mint mark altering it.
But if it is the same style, the die/coin may have experienced the above mentioned things.

Sorry Pete it's actually 1979 S proof nickels with the two variety mintmarks. Here's the PCGS link.

1981 S proof nickels also have two varieties of mintmark if you scroll and look at the coin notes.

Thanks Coop for the info. :) Could it be a rpm making it wider too?

MS70Error5: If there is a spread then it would be a RPM because the exact spot was not punched on a previous hit.

The spread between punching is what makes a RPM.
