I realize it is probably a D, however the dime has three layers. Was given as change, Thought it was interesting.

It's a 1969. Clad gives it away. A 60 would be silver. So, yes, it is a 1969 D dime that has been hard at work for a long time.

think that is a 1969 a 60 would have the mint mark on the reverse

I agree, a damaged 1969-D that is worth exactly $0.10.

looks like the copper part is on a different level than the clad layer... maybe it was put in an acid that only ate away at the copper?

That's what I was thinking as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't nickel more reactive than copper?
