Hi, I'm Brent. I'm 43, have a BFA in Performing Arts and an MDiv in Theology. And I just happen to like coins, and bills. A few years ago I took the tour through the local Bureau of Engraving out here in TX. It was a lot of fun. I grew up in Denver, so I've been through the mint there, and toured the one up in northern Cali when I lived up that way.

I found this community while searching for an answer as to why people are looking for '82 coins. I had read years ago that '82 quarters were sought after, but never heard why. Today a search sent me to a post on here from four years ago which explained that mint sets were not produced in '82 or '83. Even the guy at the local gold exchange had no clue about those years. I've been gathering 82's for about the past 10 years, since I'd first heard about the quarters. I think they've all come from change dispensed by a vending machine. (I think all my '64's came from the McDonalds on Maui—I'm pretty sure some guy's collection got spent by a hungry kid who thought they were just a bunch of quarters.)

I've managed to collect 8 '82's so far. 7 are D, but number 8 looks like a P. I'm still trying to figure out how the "I" and the first half of the "N" in "In" and the "T" in "TRUST" got smashed while the rim right next to the letters remains undamaged. I also don't know what caused the circle impression that is the size of a penny on the face of the same coin. Even under a loop the mint mark could be mistaken for a smashed "F", that is if there had ever been a mint in an F locale. So it must be a P as it doesn't seem like it could have been a D.

That's about it for now.

to CCF.The last coin is a P mint mark. The damage you speak of sounds like it is from a coin counting/wrapping machine or a gum ball type machine.I don't see much of a premium for circulated 82 or 83 quarters,P or D...IMHO.
Hope you stick around and enjoy or great site.

Welcome! All I collect are coins of '82 from all centuries. It's a wonderful year!! I'm mainly into classic and world coins, but scoop up the occasional US error 1982 as the opportunity permits. I've not seen many circulated 1982 coinage carry a premium except a couple varieties, but there are lots of things on the date to look out for. Some in high MS grades can get very pricey, however. Good luck and have fun!

Sounds like a Grease Filled Die. Not rare, but fun - the tiny bit of grease used to lubricate the die also picks up metal filings, fibers, everything - and when you push that die down on a small metal disk with TONS of force, there's no place for it to go, so part of the design doesn't get impressed.
