Good Day All,
I have always loved American history and that lead to my coin project I am going to undertake for 2016. It is to collect one of every US coin that was minted during the civil war time period, even if it takes the whole 2016 year to do it.
As far as condition I am thinking to be at least VF and higher.
If anyone knows of an online source to a website with info on the coinage minted during that error I would be grateful.
Thank you SS

I am not sure I am understanding your post. Just one coin of each type or one coin of each type for every year and mint mark minted from 1861-1865? If it is the latter, just the $20 coins alone will run you roughly $61,000 in VF.

A type set of silver and copper that circulated during the war might be easy enough, if you are only getting one of each type and with a civil war date. But every year of every type including gold, that will be a challenge.

I would start small--IHCs, 2 cent, 3 cent, and the silver issues. The gold issues will kill your budget, since you will need the $1, $2.50, $3, $5, $10, and $20. And forget about the Confederate coins; those are impossibly rare, although the banknotes are affordable.
What is your ultimate goal for this set? I would recommend starting with a specific year, maybe 1865 and expanding from there.

Oh I see in my post the confusion.
I should have been more clear before, I want to do a type set of silver and copper that circulated during the civil war era.
As far as the gold coin issues I had no idea they existed to now and I will not pursue those for sure.

Don't forget to include civil war tokens, they circulated all during the war as well.

Some Yankee & Confederate paper money will spice up any Civil War collection. Also, an example of encased postage and some postage currency will add to the cool factor!

I found the wordplay amusing. Was it accidental or deliberate? (Era/error) There was also scrip issued on both sides, and sutler tokens too.

My idea with an eye to budget: 1863 1 cent Indian C/N 1865 1 cent Indian Bronze 1865 2 cent Shield 1865 3 cents nickel 1861 or 1862 3 cents silver 1861 or 1862 H10C ( Half Dime) Liberty Seated 1861 or 1862 10 cents Liberty Seated 1861 or 1862 25 cents Liberty Seated 1861 or 1861-O 50 cents Liberty Seated 1865 $1 Liberty Seated If you have the budget, you should also pick up an 1861-O (Confederate Minted) Liberty Seated half, just make sure it's slabbed by a reputable TPG. At higher price levels, you might add some gold (US or Pioneer.) I'd throw in one or two Civil War Tokens or store cards as well.

Silver coin only really circulated on the pacific coast during the civil war and even the years following it. Interestingly, the base coins did not circulate in the west.
Depending on just how literal your goal is you might consider doing a collection of the base metal coins from philly and silver from San Fran.
The majority of US silver at that time was exported to Canada, and various carribean and latin american countries to be used as legal tender for appx. 15 years until the bullion values swung back and it was more profitable to bring the silver back to the states.

Well CCF family Thursday is the day. I get my annual small bonus check and after taxes and bill payments I have 150.00 for myself. Its time to start buying my civil war coins. Thanks for all the input. And thanks Paralyse for the list. I will post pics as they come in here on this thread.
