Here is the 2nd of 3 of my brother's Ancient Coins that I don't know if they are genuine or not.

As with coin #3, I leave all the details of this piece up to the Ancient Forum members to advise if any of the three coins (in seperate threads) are genuine or fake..

If genuine, any history on this piece would be helpful.

The triple turret crown suggests to me that this coin is a Byzantine bronze of Irene, wife of Constantine V1, ruler in her own right, AD 797-802.

It's supposed to be a coin of the Byzantine empress Irene, but sadly it's not. It's a not a real coin.

The edge is not irregular enough to make me confident enough to consider this coin to be genuine.
Rest in Peace

Can anyone who is calling this coin a "fake" give a few more details as to why you came to that conclusion?

It's been years since I sold my Byzantine set to a very well known dealer in NY, but my Irene looked very much like this one, and I got very good money for it.

I'd simply like to learn a bit more about your decision of calling it a copy, not to disagree with you.

The style of the patina/dirt application is very similar to what I see on several fake Chinese coins I have come across.

Thanks again, this is why I enjoy collecting errors, as most fakes are easily noticed.

While the portrait may look like Irene, the style is wrong. The details are weak and don't look like a struck coin. The patina looks fake and lastly I have not seen this reverse on any of her coins.

It is fake. See the many tiny casting bubbles? The weak rounded details are also typical of casting.
