I bought this at a coin show in Utah several years ago. The encased 1903 cent is pretty much black on the obverse and brown on the reverse, but everything is still readable!

If only the Princess could talk!

Thought it was pretty cool! Enjoy!

Looks like the coin didn't bring its original owner much luck.

westernsky - I think this qualifies in my book as - Pretty Darn Spectacular! I think it's a terrific piece. You want to talk about luck? I think I'd feel pretty lucky to find a souvenir of The Great San Francisco Earthquake. Think of the times in which this piece was made and sold (probably for a nickel or a dime). Talk about history! Thanks for sharing the pics. Great find. Jack

That's one "earth shattering" souvenir! This is the first one of these, I've seen. Cooool !!

I've long referred to the 1906-S Barber coins as earthquake coins ...

I recall reading that the San Francisco mint suffered minimal damage during the 1906 earthquake and returned to production fairly quick.

As far as I know there is no way to tell if 06-S mint coins are "pre" or "post" earthquake strikes. All we know is they were struck in 1906.

On this encased Indian, I figure that some enterprising individual saw a way to make some money and probably gathered up damaged coins (or created damaged coins!) and made these encasements as ordered.
