J.H.S.

They both appear to be small date varieties, but I would need a larger picture to be sure. Here's the link to the photos of the large and small date varieties from the centproject page.

Definitely both small date. Easiest way to tell is drop straight down from the very top of the 6.

If you hit inside the loop of the 6, small date.
If you hit the outside of the loop, large date.

Thank you, Seated and Copper....(nice benchmark, (re: "6"), too. The Red Book contradicts the pictures it shows.

Chuck, you just made my day! I have never been sure, 1. Without two side-by-side to check, or an outline, (takes the place of the overlay procedure). My method should have shown me this detail, (and probably would have, if I had been working on the size, rather than the MM category, using triangulation.

I'm curious as to which edition of the " Red Book" has it wrong. I like finding goofs in there. There is even a 1963 Edition where duplicate pages can be found in the book.

A bunch of years ago, I contacted them about the fact that they had a 1997 Doubled Ear cent Illustration where the caption called it a 1984 Doubled ear cent.

Strangely enough, they still don't list the 1997 DDO.
