Good evening! So I did something for the first time ever today... I SOLD/TRADED a coin. Been collecting for about 25 years since I was middle school and my collection had essentially been a black hole as far as the rest of hobby was concerned as I only ever acquired, but never put anything back on the market. We'll today I broke the mold. A coin typically out of my budget but most desired came across ebay (an XF 8 Reales from Bolivia with a Repunched Date). So to fund it I made available an 1805 4 Berries Dime, which is a really cool coin, but not what I've been focused on in a while. I received a fair enough offer via ebay that essentially covers me on the 8 Reales within a couple hours. One of the odd things about this deal is the buyer is from the same not-too-big community I was living in during high school when I bought the dime. I've since traveled all over the world and recently settled in Ft Myers, FL. It's like the dime is going home and the 8 Reales is coming home to me! Just thought I'd share the experience. Be most excellent! Edited by Collects82 11/28/2015 7:54 pm

It's funny how that worked out. Nice story.
You've managed to collect for a long time without selling or trading but I suppose at some point we all have to refine our collection.

While I have yet to sell or trade a coin, I feel that there is always room for me to refine my collection.
I start arranging my coins in new ways Sometimes, I "downgrade" a coin, so to speak, making some part of my collection more relevant. It is one of the main spects of curating coins as a numismatist.

I am not a seller, but I have done one or two trades in the past...
When I was 8 I did a really bad trade, and since that point I only trade stuff that I have doubles of.
I sold a heap of sovereigns when gold got high - which I regret but it needed to be done since I wasn't working then.
My collection is a black hole, but doubles are like Hawking radiation (the only thing that can escape)

Nothing wrong with selling or trading coins at all. If people didn't do this then where on earth would we as collectors be able to source our coins I buy, sell, trade and give away coins all the time and my collections evolve accordingly

Like you I have mostly been on the buying end, but have sold a few coins from my collection as well. Mostly with mixed results. It is an experience many collectors should have. Different experience from buying, for sure.
It must have hurt selling that 1805 dime to fund your new purchase, though! It would have pained my no end, I know as much as I like easy U.S coinage. You mention Ft. Myers, Fl. A real coincidence. We vacation in SW Florida every year (to escape the northern european winter, if possible). Really like the area from Naples all the way to Ft. Myers. Lovely beaches! While we are there I always drop by the Flamingo Market on Bonita Beach Rd. to hunt for coins. Not much success with that lately, unfortunately.

I work in Naples and recently moved into the Estero/S. Ft Myers area. I haven't been into the Flamingo Market yet. Yeah, the 1805 had always been a highlight so it hurts a tad and it was such a pretty coin for the lower grade, but I am stoked about this 8 Reales coming in. Thanks to the El Cazador, the Mexico City 8 Reales are on ebay all the time, but one from Bolivia for this specific date is really uncommon. Maybe the price guides treat it a common, but its been a long while since one actually came across a block somewhere. So I feel like I've traded quality and got better quality given I hoard coins of '82. I'm excited with the deal!
