Hi, Please give an overall grade to this coin. The guy that sold this to me did so using a split grade where the obverse was better than the reverse. I have always been a bit unclear on how the overall grade is figured when the grade designation of both sides does not match. Along with the overall grade please also put your opinion on how you think this split grade issue is dealt with. thx

This is a date not often seen. Split grade? Not to me, the reverse was just not well struck. Looks F15 and quite valuable. An old cleaning should not hurt it.

Grading 1811/09 dimes is not quite straight forward in my opinion as one needs to consider the severe shattering the reverse die often shows. The reverse die was used to strike all 51000 1809 dated dimes, and then was put into service in 1811 to strike an additional 65000 coin with the date now modified to read 1811/09. In its most advanced state the reverse shows an extensive series of reverse die breaks. This is clearly shown on these two examples in my collection. The first struck from an advanced reverse die state, while the second was struck from a fairly early state of the die. The reverse grades about same in both coins, while the obverse is obviously better struck in the second example. This I attribute to the reverse die breaking. In your example the reverse die was still fresh and just stating to break, so this particularity is not seen, and you can expect both obverse and reverse to be equally struck. As such I would grade your example using normal standards for capped bust dimes with a grade of strong F15 on the obverse, but not quite VF20. The reverse does have VF20 details. So yes, a split grade, which the obverse carries in this case, so F15. I am not convinced the coin has been cleaned - the obverse seems a little bright but this could be due to the lighting conditions.

Quote: ...obverse seems a little bright but this could be due to the lighting This is correct as evidenced by comparing the shade of the two background substrate colors: the obverse one is lighter. I was messing around in GIMP trying to accent the over date a bit more. On that note I'm not getting much action on the variety piece of this coin. Therefore, if any of you would like to jump over to that URL and comment, please do so. The closeup of the over-date there shows an intentional emphasis towards a very darkened photo to better highlight the detail in this area: https://goccf.com/t/246523thx

I don't think it's been cleaned, either. Possibly improperly handled, and hand oils got into the coin, yes.
