I inherited this from my father... and don't know a whole lot about it... other than it seems to be a really neat piece of history! Seems like someone went to a lot of work to counterfeit dimes, but I guess they were worth a lot more in 1854! lol

Anyway, let me know what you guys think about selling it, or what it might be worth. It looks rusty, but is really solid, the two halves fit together well, and it feels like it could still be used if a person just wanted to play with it.

Thanks!

This is the holy grail when it comes to contemporary counterfeit collecting. Don't be quick to accept offers. Shop it around. I'd expect this to easily fetch three- or four-figure prices.

That is way too cool, I only wish you knew the history behind it. If I lived in Spencer, WV, I'd be trying to find you, and making an offer. Thanks for sharing.

Ron

It is a very neat item and a LOT of collectors would love to own it (including me) but I would try to be very discrete about trying to sell it or "shopping it around". Because unlike the counterfeit coins themselves, the possession of dies or molds that can be used to produce counterfeits is NOT legal.

From Title 18 Chapter 25 Sec 487

Whoever, without lawful authority, possesses any such die, hub, or mold, or any part thereof, or permits the same to be used for or in aid of the counterfeiting of any such coins of the United States—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than fifteen years, or both.

It used to specify the fine at $5,000 but now leave the amount to the discretion of the judge.

Now if you could somehow obtain "lawful authority" then you'd be fine. But I don't think listing it on ebay would be a smart idea.
