I would like to soak my dateless buffalo in vinegar, but wouldn't that damage the coin severely, so much so that it would not be worth keeping?

yes and no... it will damage the coin, but without a date the coin is worthless anyway. even an acid damaged coin can fill a hole in an album or if you get a better date out of it, an acid dated coin can even be worth a couple of bucks.

Weersteve has a way of restoring but you can still tell easily. He does pretty good at finding key dates and selling on ebay.
