The appearance of staples on my cardboard coin mounts has always bothered me. Over sixty years of collecting I have painted them with white-out, spray-painted the staples before use, used a flat clinch stapler, and tried various glues and double sided tapes in attempts to dispense with staples altogether. None of the glues or tapes I tried ever adhered to the mylar for more than a few minutes. The only method that worked was the laborious process of peeling off the mylar around the inside edges of the mount and sealing the bare cardboard with white glue. Finally the problem seems to be solved, and I want to share the solution with the forum for comment and criticism. The answer seems to be Ranger Wonder Tape, available on Amazon for $3.00 or so. It is a super-sticky double sided tape, ¼" wide with peelable red backing, and comes in 15-ft. rolls. Applying it takes a bit of care, but once closed the mount stays tightly closed - it sat out on my desk over night without popping open - and the tape is advertised to be acid-free and of archival quality. Has anyone else used this stuff?

I just use copper plated staples. No rust marks left behind, even after decades.
What is wrong with self adhesive 2x2'?

I use the Lighthouse self adhesive 2x2's. I worried that the glue could be bad for the coins, but I haven't heard any complaints or had any problems... I am surprised at the popularity of staples given this product is available.

I don't have a problem with staples. I use flat clinch staples and never had an issue. I could care less what color they are. But if you really don't want to use staples, go with the self adhesive 2x2's .

If you "could care less" that means that you care some... how much we cannot be sure. Maybe you "couldn't care less" which would mean you don't care at all.
Just saying...

Like you I hate staples and have used self-sealing holders but sometimes I did what you do to regular holders with one exception. Rather than peel the plastic back I would take a sharp edge and scratch into the plastic until you get to the cardboard and then use Elmer's glue (just in case it hit the coin, it washes of with water) which bonds cardboard together well. Then I use Popsicle sticks and small clamps and let it go for a day. Very labor intensive.

XavierZ: That's pretty much the way I did it for the last 20 years, but I got really tired of peeling and scraping.

But if you could do only one 2x2 a day then your going to need a dozen vice's .Oh ; and make sure you have enough tubes of liquid nails and paint thinner or turpentine for 2x2 clean up ! Sorry it's just a joke ,don't take it the wrong way.

I have no problem with using staples. I use smooth tip pliers to flatten them. This has worked just fine for years.

Always check with manufacturers as to their products. Some glues and tapes emit gasses as they dry. Gluing or taping a 2x2 may end up doing some damage if in the process gasses are emitted that harm the coins. I've used 3M clear tape to seal most of my 2x2 flips. Been doing this for a long, long time. Cheap and easy to apply and simply cut to open.
