Hi All........... I'm from Lower Bucks County, Penna and have been collecting US coins, off and on, since I was a kid. Right now I'm all over the coin collecting hobby and not zeroed in on any specific coin or period. What I'm trying to do is assemble an eclectic collection of coins and US paper currency for my young grandkids so if they have an interest, when they are much older, they will have a nice amount of collectible coins to research and maybe start collecting.

I do have a question for anyone who knows about coin storage. I have bought a few coins from MCM, Gainesville, and other large companies, and most ship the coins in "flips". My question is...... is it safe to leave any coins in flips for long periods of time in storage? Will the flips have a detrimental effect on coins over a period of time and devalue the coin? Are there safer methods to store coins including precious metals like gold, silver, etc.?

If anyone knows about safe coin storage please let me know. This must be a common question for people like me. Thanks and it's good to belong to this group of like minded collectors.

Ah, Bucks County! Some of my best memories of growing up in NE Philly are of summer day trips with my family to Peddler's Village and New Hope. Great times.

Welcome to CCF. FYI, dealers usually sell/ship coins in the cheaper flips, so it'd be best to pick up non-PVC flips to transfer your coins to for long term storage.

Most modern flips are safe, but there are still flips out there with polyvinyl chloride - PVC - the bad kind.

If you have any questions you should probably call the seller, as long as you're buying from a reputable company they'll be able to answer the question.

You can also invest $5 and buy a package of safe flips, then carefully handling the coin only by the edge transfer them. That will give you some peace of mind.
