As previously mentioned, I'm new to this hobby and could use some advice. I'd like to get a nice collection of the Presidential dollar coins going and I see that the US Mint sells rolls of 25 coins for $36. Are these uncirculated? Is the markup in price standard from the mint (if you are buying 25 uncirculated coins, I guess it's not a bad deal)? Lastly, silver proofs. Are they worth getting in addition to the annual proof sets? Do they hold the value as well (or better because they're silver)? Thanks! I'm making my first trip to a local coin shop tomorrow at lunch to browse. I can't wait to be overwhlemed.Of course, after spending several hours sorting through 5,000 pennies last night, I think I've got coins on the brain... Brandon

Welcome to the forum as well as coin collecting. You made the right choice on both accounts. You can get the Presidential dollar coins at your bank. At the right time, you will catch them in uncirculated rolls. The ones from the mint are uncirculated, but who cares, just pass on those. Yes, the markup is standard, they always do it. (see the Bald Eagle Commemorative Set) And the silver proofs are worth it and hold their value better than the clads, in my opinion that is.

The Presidential dollar rolls available from the US Mint are uncirculated and come with a "special wrapper". Yes, they are more than face value, but the US Mint does not sell anything for face value. IMO and in the opinion of many others, the wrappers do not add anything to the value. The difference is that ordering from the Mint is the only way most people can get them from both mints(P&D). Yes, you can get the same quality coins from your local bank in uncirculated condition when they are released but they are only distributed geographically according to what Fed district you live in. I notice from your profile that you are in a western state so you would only be able to get new Denver issues from a bank. If you are only interested in an uncirculated roll and not the particular mint mark, get them from a bank for face value. If you want both mints, purchase from the US Mint or get enough posts so you can make a trade with our members in the east As for the silver proof sets, I buy one every year. I do not purchase the regular clad proof sets as I would rather own them in silver but that is just my personal preference. I do think that the silver sets will probably hold their value a bit better than the clad sets strictly due to the silver content. Keep in mind that the only silver coins are the dime, State Quarters, and half dollar- the others are their normal composition.

Thanks for the sound advice. I think a silver proof set is going into my budget for the coming weeks... Likewise, what are the chances I can score some 2007 uncirculated dollars from my local bank? Next to none? If I want an uncirculated collection of presidental dollars, perhaps I should buy the 07's from the mint and then start hitting up my bank for the 08's when they are released? I'm not terribly interested in P&D for each (and I agree, I'll not see them out here for a while...I have a tough time finding P mint State Quarters!) just a clean specimen from each year.

WELCOME. My suggestion is to not bother at all with Mint pruchases of any of those baby sized dollar coins. If you are into them, just go to banks and ask for them. Most banks are trying to get rid of them. Only collectors want them so the banks are loaded with them. At least around me they are. They have actually gone to asking people if they want them. Most say no. For now they are popular. In the future, they will be only worth a dollar and you'll have trouble getting rid of them. I think another novelty like the Bicentennial Quarters that no one collects any more. If I were you I'd slow down. Just order a proof and uncirc set from the Mint each year. Continue going through rolls and bags of coins from where ever you can acquire them until you find what you're really interested in. Oddly enough many, many people change their minds frequently.

I think your chances of getting uncirculated dollars at the bank are pretty good. Some banks in my area still have rolls of Adams, Jefferson, and madison in original wrappers. Not the same as you buy on the mint website but they're original and uncirculated. They even say the name on the side of the roll. Call around to all of the local banks and ask them if they ever get new rolls of quarters or dollars. Then call back once a week until they have them. I get a roll of Presidential dollars and State Quarters each time they come out. Not every bank has them, but enough around here do that if one doesn't have them, then I can go to another. Its really not very much trouble.

I have a different option from everybody else. I would order the coins from the U.S. Mint because that way you are guaranteed to get them. I know in my area you can not get Presidential dollars from the local bank. They have refused to order them from the Fed. So I ordered the 2007 United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set™ for $14.95. I am not opopposed to spending a little extra when it saves me the time from having to find them at local shops.

there are actually 3 coins per pres. the P, D, and S-only proof sets. probably not a coin that will have high value but people will be attracted to collect them just in case...i like the coin and it's not bad to have the girls with the guys to help resale the coins one day...I'm putting them both together

Silver proofs are very satisfying - beautiful if you keep them and not too shabby if you sell them. If you want to make a million dollars, buy a million dollars worth and sell them at cost :)
