Well I'm down to seven coins to complete my collection: 1909S VDB (Of course) 1922 (Of course) 1955 Double Die 1992 Close AM1992D Close AM1999 Wide AM1999S Close AMI updated my coin collection I hadn't looked at since 1988 but noticed all the different error coins. In my earlier day it was only 1922 Plain and 1955 Double Die. I was able to get a lot of the error coins I was missing to date from ebay. I have heard about fake pennies being made, i.e. 1909S VDB so am concerned. Should I just get the ANACS Certified for these last coins or just take a chance they are legitimate on ebay. I ask since one of the coins I got thru ebay was a Type I S versus advertized Type II S. I informed the seller only since I believe he was in error and didn't realize his mistake. He did offer to take coin back but the Type I S was still better than the one I had so I informed him I would keep it. Anyone have any ideas on how to avoid getting a fake coin?

No ideas, however congratulations on nearing completion of your collection. Mine has a lot further to go.

Grats! I do not plan on getting your last 5 coins, unless I find a steal of a deal. I dont think I will consider them part of a set, more like errors/varieties. Besides, my Dansco does not have holes for those.

I agree on the last five, I have no plans to add them since I do not have spots for them in my Dansco. That said, I need 09S, 09SVDB, 14D, 22 Plain, 31S and 70S SD. I have the same concerns about fakes. I'll probably spend the extra for a Top Three TPG graded specimen for the 09SVDB and 14D. I feel more comfortable (for now) with the 09S, 31S, and 70S SD. I will probably go cheap and put a Weak D in the 1922 Plain slot.

You may get varying opinions as some on here aren't very fond of the certifiers. But in my opinion, if you are going after the keys on ebay.. ABSOLUTELY without a doubt. Make sure you like the coin, agree with the grade, like the eye appeal AND make sure it's certified. Not only ANACS, but also PCGS, NGC and ICG. Only those four.

Hehe, we are idealogical opposites. I only collect the keys since I don't have the patience to collect every single one.

Thanks for all the replies; will concentrate on the two: 1909S VDB and 1922 Plain...and think about getting the other five...

I'm not much of a fan of slabbing, but for those higher value coins and/or coins commonly counterfeited such as Seated or Trade dollars or coins often altered such as the 1922-P cent, I'd go the PCGS/NGC/ANACS route. Crack it out of the slab if you like 'em raw - you'll know it's the real deal. Ken
