I have quite a few impaired proofs all but one from CRH. I picked up a State Quarter a couple years back in my change. Here are a few of the proofs I collected during my 2015 project - 1963, 1964, 1969S. The 1965 looks to be a liberated nickel from a mint set perhaps.

Quote: Dang Jack! Quite impressive! Like I said it would scroll pages if I posted every proof I had ever found. Maybe next Sunday I will have time to track down the rest of those not shown. I sold off 14 rolls of impaired proof halves 2 years ago and kept the really bad ones like in the first pic in a bag which I still have and have since accumulated another 10 or more rolls since. I will have to gift a few of the good ones to my Secret Santa winner once the names go out.

All these US proofs! Let's mix things up a bit... USSR, 1 Ruble 1983 (1988 restrike) Ivan Fyodorov (first Russian printer) Mintage 55,000 Got this one in a "My dad passed away and here's his entire world coin collection" lot on ebay for a steal. Its story is lost to time, but it is certainly no longer in pristine condition.

this is the one and only circulating proof that I have found. I think it was a coin roll hunting find. not in prooflike condition any longer - is it...

I have no experience with proofs and I'm interested into any knowledge that would shed light onto how to tell if a circulated coin is proof. Apart of course from mintmark-year combination that only comes in proof. What to look for?

Modern proofs are usually easier to tell, since they will usually have *some* of the shine left in the fields, especially between letters. It also takes a decent amount of circulation to wear away the "frosted" effect. Before the cameo proofs became a thing, it could be a lot harder, maybe even impossible. There are sometimes die markers on proof coins (for example, every 1895 Philly Morgan dollar has been definitively identified as a proof, even the circulated ones), but if a proof from the 60s or earlier hits circulation and is not rescued immediately, it may reach the point of being indistinguishable from a well-struck business strike. I have a 1969-S nickel that I posted here a long time ago, and I still to this day do not know if it is a proof.
