Here's one I'm not so sure of but it's not a coin you'd think ICCS would error on.
I thought all the 9 over 8 had the narrow gap on the vine at leaf seven, this looks like a wide gap but they're not great pictures.

Too much 'glow' on the coin to be able to tell.

Looks like a wide 9 over 8 to me.

Keep in mind that this is an old 2 letter certificate. Coin was graded before many of the more modern 1859 variety distinctions were in the major books.

Excellent photos ...seems to be taken in his dark room with the light off...for the enhanced antique effect...

....no extra charge for the $99.00 cent with the reflective reflection wrap still on....

There were 13 different 9/8 working dies used for the 9/8 (or wide 9 as some call it)so you really can't go by many marks, although all should have a very narrow vine gap/break at 7 because they were struck very early in the cycle. Additionally, most of the inside loops of the upper 9 are getting closer ot circular, rather than real loing ovals like the 59's. The photos are very murky and I would pass on it. ICCS does 'technical" grading, where spots and surface crap don't count. I'd say that it has 11' pole marks all over it.

The wide gap in Loop 7 means one doesn't even need to look at the date: this coin can't be a 9/8. It would be many more dies before the reverse punch resumed its deterioration at Loop 7, continuing the progression toward the eventual wide gap. By the time most of the wide gap Loop 9 dies were dated the narrow 9 punch was well used and had broadened somewhat. It is not unusual to see the "late" narrow 9 confused with the wide 9 used for the overdating. That being said, however, it is not a mistake ICCS should have made (assuming the holder has not been tampered with). But then there's no shortage of misattributions in the Provincial cent date varieties!
