E-bay purchase ... havn't gotten it in hand yet but sure would appreciate opinions on it's originality. I can return it if need be.

The toning say to me, "original".
It appears to have a slight break in toning (look at the ear and hair in that area, slider, AU-55 or -58).
But the darker spots on the reverse would be my major concern; they have to be evaluated in-hand.

Thanks Kanga - I got the coin in today's mail .... Overall a nicely struck coin with lots of red still showing. The 'rub' marks on the obverse near the ear did not show in-hand. -- but -- as you said, the marks on the reverse were more than I wanted to accept - carbon spots. A speck of verdigris here and there also. It will be returned - I will wait for another. p.s. - Your registry set of Half Cents on the NGC site is top notch :) Congrats !

I don't think it has been tooled in any way.
The high ares of the design have been exposed to some rubbing from handling,
and so have the larger areas of the fields.
That is obvious from the affected patina in these areas.

I think it is a rather pleasing coin!

sel - I agree. It is a pleasing coin... and I also agree now that it has not been tampered with. The die break at the first star and the discerning die scratches near the 6 are intact. Thanks for your input.

It may not have been whizzed or tooled in any way, but there remains the possibility that it may have been lightly cleaned, albeit a very long time ago.

It must be remembered that this coin is 180 years old.

Even with a completely original MS65++ coin that is of such an age, the cartwheel lustre if there was one, would have been completely masked by heavy patination.
It is this patination that may have been disturbed with light cleaning.

I don't ever remember seeing a very heavily patinated coin with any remaining lustre.
