Would a TPG be able to even grade a partial coin like this assuming the date and mint mark could be read?

Here's a Morgan that broke in striking, along with an explanation.

This Seated dollar would be even rarer if it's a strike break. It's a Philadelphia pre 1866, but the date is gone and you'd need an expert in all the dollar dies to figure it out.

It's also drilled and plugged. What a piece of work.

Hack saw job to prove authenticity gone wrong. It also has a few harsh staining spots that look like marks from an acid silver test, which was a first go at testing authenticity. Then someone decided a coping saw would work better to prove it was silver all the way through and was more committed than most.

I'm guessing it did not break in striking, based on the assumption that if it were truly such a rare error, nobody would deface it by drilling it for a necklace.

Are there any published sources for looking up Seated dollar dies that one could use to pin the year on this bad hombre?

Good question, llewellin. I too wonder that myself. You'd think there'd be at least someway.

I found this site:

http://www.seateddollarvarieties.co...ByDate.shtml

which could be useful, but honestly with the pictures they have I don't think I could do it.

I have to admit I only looked at the pictures for 1840 but they seem really good to me, large clear close ups of the diagnostic features for each variety. OK I looked at the 1841's and the reverse images could be a little better there, but the are still usable.

I guess the question is, without a full database of all of the dates, you can't really be too sure about if you have the right one, since one of the dates that they don't have pictures of could match better. Until there's really a comprehensive database with all of the dies, it's probably not worth even trying to go through all of them.

I wonder if this would be more of a task for image analysis machine learning, like that guy is programming to sort lincoln cents.
