Here is my humble opinion of the must have coins, thus far, in this year of 2005 and they are based on current sales and I am trying to keep all the HYPE out of this!
John Marshall silver commemorative in UNC! Only 46,351 individual coins sold thus far compared to 130,895 proofs.
2005 Satin Mint sets are keepers. Something in that set will go through the roof so we can wait and see. I do think the Satin buffalo and the Ocean in View will be very strong but, in the end, the Ocean in View will be the whole keeper of the series. Current sales of the business strike Ocean in View are about a third of what the Buffalo did and quite frankly most of the folks I know are still hunting buffalo's. Ocean in View business strikes by the roll would be nice to set back for a few years?
The 2005 Marine Commemorative in Unc. would be my pick of the litter to hold its value and continue to rise after the hype wears off. The sets will loose their luster the quickest (coin and stamp and the American Legacy collection) as like it or not in the end it is about the COIN and nothing else.
Well we can sit back and let some time pass to see just how my little predictions play out. I have seen the 2005 proof Buffalo nickels going around the $7 level from a local dealer so I have already made a few bucks there by buying proofs as early and quickly as possible. I have amassed a pretty nice herd of Buffalo nickels in satin, proof and business strikes and still think the OV nickels will be the winner. (Yes, I am rat holing those as well!!!) Okay, now I have spilled my guts so what do you guys and gals have to say about 2005 coins?
Rest in Peace

Hi Guys

I guess I dont really have any must haves beyond the 2005 Proof sets !!

The nickles being the only thing different this year, and I'm not a big fan of them, although !!!! I would like to have maybe a high grade Regular business strike for each of the nickle series!!!

I truely think this is where the Money is !!

I never buy any new issues, I never buy anything after 1837.

May I ask "Why 1837 as that seems like a strange starting or ending point"? I am just curious as to how you arrived at that period of time as the Gothics came after that didn't they? How can you not want the Gothics other than the fact they are just a little pricey!
I prefer our older classics, as well as world classics now, but try to keep up with the moderns. While I am a die hard coin collector I find the moderns a challenge, a game and kind of a gamble without tying up large sums of money and hoping for a return on the extras I buy. The 2001 Indian/Buffalo commemorative dollar was such a coin. My wife and I bought 70 the day they went on sale and 10 more over the next 9 days. My only regrets is selling TOO SOON!!! I like the idea of being RIGHT once in a while and all the wrongs have made the RIGHTS pretty special!

Metalman I too like the proof sets, expecially the silver, but one must look at the numbers sold. The mint sets have been busted open in the masses but I don't see that with proof sets this year. The mint sets should soar much faster than the proof sets. Also I believe all the coins in mint and proof sets, after the Statehood Quarter series ends, will drop like a rock as the Mint will bring on something new to collect. Could be wrong but I wouldn't want to be sitting on large numbers of mint sets or proof sets after 2008 ends. Guess I still have a very sour taste in my mouth when it comes to 70's and 80's sets.

1837 was the year William IV died and Victoria succeded. I try and avoid Victoria and afterwards(being a date collector I don't like long reigns anyhow). The gothics sure are pretty but I don't really want one. I had a gorgeous gothic florin once, I enjoyed it when I had it. Then I sold it Stujoe, no regrets over letting it go.

As for gothic crowns, I could have had one if i'd wanted one. I had the money for it and it was at a good price, I could have bought it there and then. I decided however that I really didn't want one. So I bought a medieval gold noble instead.

Roman coins are my new fix. Roman and medieval that's what I want!

Ah Ageka that is the one denomination I do take exception to. Vicky shield reverse sovereigns are gorgeous coins, I used to collect them. I had an UNC 1871 sovereign for a while. Gorgeous coin, sadly it was slabbed so I sold it.

I never ever had or saw a slabbed coin in my life
This Vicky is a sad story she was abused glued onto a
piece of hardbord to collect
Allthough uncirculated the shield glued to the hardboard is pristine after an acetone soak ; however the face is kind of AU because of the friction of the other hardboard pages

Poor coin!

Now 23's not any different to most other numbers as far as I can tell. The really high numbers like 132 (or whatever it was) are interesting.

I love the die numbers myself though, I once thought about collecting them by die number. 1 through to the top... now that would be different!

Gotta agree with Metalman here, the only thing I had to have this year was my proof set. That and those Euros Terry found for me... I may be kicking myself later for not getting the Marine Corps commem, but we'll see.

There's no such thing as a sure thing and only time will tell
but it looks like the dimes are still being completely ignored.
Setting aside a couple boxes of nice new dimes couldn't hurt and
if in five years they don't have a premium you can always just
spend them. You can further reduce risk by going through a quan-
tity and saving only the nice examples. The interest lost on twen-
ty rolls of gems is quite nominal but the potential profit is large.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Cladking that is one great observation! Actually a collector with a few extra bucks ought to go after the satins, don't you think? Can't help but wonder what a roll of any of the satins will be worth 10 years from now seeing how it was the first year for them as a set? You are right about one thing for sure as NO ONE is looking for rolls of dimes and I don't believe they did last year either. Everyone is consummed by Statehood Quarters and new nickels so those dimes just may be the sleeper of 2004 and 2005.
