Greeks Told To Declare Cash "Under The Mattress", Jewelry And Precious Stones http://www.cnbc.com/2015/12/02/Quote: Greek politicians, journalists, and civil servants are being asked to declare any large sums of cash or precious metals they may have stashed at home as part of the overhaul of the country's tax returns.
First reported by the Greek business news website Enikonomia.gr, the new addition to the rules mean Greeks will have to declare any cash holdings above 15,000 euros ($15,888) - outside of a bank - and any jewelry and precious stones worth over 30,000 euros.
I do understand that there is a lot of tax avoidance in Greece but this seems to be an extreme measure which could put the framework in place for wholesale confiscation of assets. Since many central banks are implementing deflationary policies they are tying to dissuade people from having hard assets in places where the government cannot easily enforce a bail-in where depositors are forced to accept negative interest rates.

To me this doesn't sound that strange: in the Netherlands, where I live, you have to report any cash holdings above 500 euros on your tax return. If you expect the rest of Europe to bail you out, then the rest of Europe expects you to actually tax your citizens on an equal footing...

This is too funny to be true.

More like to true to be funny.
Now do they REALLY think everyone is going to run right out and report all their large holding of cash so they can be taxed on it? It's like our IRS requires drug dealers to report all of their income from the sale of illegal drugs. Or anyone else to report income that comes from illegal sources.

It's more like they want you to report it so they can come take it. It has already been taxed and grandma is holding money in a shoe box under the bed why do they want you to report it?

Tax evasion is a crime , tax avoidance is your duty to pay as little as legally possible. In Greece, Italy and other places criminal tax evasion is rampant. Sorry guys but Taxes are what you pay to live in a civilized country. No sympathy here.

Greece is sort of unique, people work 20 hour weeks and 4 hour days but is paid for full week, and expect to retire in early 50 rest of Europe is finally fed up with constant bail outs.

Quote: Tax evasion is a crime , tax avoidance is your duty to pay as little as legally possible. And so is double, triple, etc. taxation of the same monies. Governments are professional thieves. Just because you have cash stashed at home doesn't mean it hasn't already been taxed. It blows my mind that people rush to defend big, obtrusive governments. Greece got themselves in this mess by their socialist policies. They ran out of other peoples money by over-spending- the end result of socialism. Yes, they have had a tax evasion problem but why is a government allowed to spend more than they take in?

So tax evasion is a crime, but demonetising currency is not, sounds like government theft to me. I have taxed money at home, why should I declare it. No wonder why a lot of people do not want to obey the law, when stupid stuff like this comes up.

You can have all the tax paid cash laying around you want , no crime in that. That said all government is big and getting bigger, look at the fiscal mess of the USA , Japan , Canada to name just a few. What they fritter our tax dollars away on is beyond our control. Just pay what you legally owe, vote in every election and you earned the right to complain and sleep at night.

How exactly is Greece going to put a price on the precious stones? That's pretty funny to me.

Tax evasion is a crime. Tax avoidance makes use of legal loopholes. Tax avoision is a grey area.
