I received this nickel in change today. It appears to be a clipped planchet error. However I don't see the blakesley effect on it yet am aware that it not need be present for it to be authentic. So is there another way to determine authenticity? Take a look at the pictures.

This is a clipped (incomplete) planchet error.

On a smaller clip such as this one, and on coins with some wear, it is sometimes difficult to see the Blakesley effect. It may not even be there on smaller clips.

In any case, take a look at the portion of the edge that is near the U and the M of UMUM. (it is the same on the obverse but it is easier to describe on the reverse)

There are two things: One is that there is a slight distortion of the lettering moving outward toward the edge of the "clip".

The second thing, and this is the same on the obverse, is that the rim as it goes into the clip is pointed in shape and is not abrupt or blunt. See how the rim has a point above the U and the M of UNUM?

If this were a handmade job, the points would be blunt and abruptly cut off.

This is a nice find in change:-)

ha! awesome! thanks. My coin dealer gave me this coin as change from his change drawer! He doesn't carry errors and is not interested in them so I guess that's why he didn't notice it! Thanks Bill!

Some coin dealers will intentionally make change with collectible coins to create an interest in something. I knew a guy back east that would throw a Buffalo nickel in with change:-)

That is cool. :-) Very unusual for them to be so close in appearance, but there you have it.
