I doubt few are interested, But I am related to a Lowell Thomas. He and my grandfather Carl Thomas grew up in the mining towns near Cripple Creek Colorado. My great grandmother was a Cooney from Ireland. Her brother is the real story. MJ Cooney worked the mines in the region. He sent for his sister who later married my great grandfather. This should do for a setting. Cooney was a traveler and he eventually ended up near South Africa during the Boer War. A coin was minted at the end of that war often called the Veld Pond in 1902. Cooney was the Assayer for that mint and hand picked a few coins which he later brought back to America. From my grand father to my father and then to me in 1954. The coin came with a detailed letter about the coin in Cooney's hand. I still have both. The letter corrects some details about the making of the coin and the number minted. I am not sure if anyone is interested in learning more about this coin. Please let me know.

I know forum member tokensa1 is keen on early South African coinage, though I haven't heard from him in a while; here's his webpage on the veld pond, which mentions your letter.

Dear Onejinx, Thank you for your interest. I am not sure what more I could say. Scott's website has much of the story. I would like to get the coin appraised and named as the Cooney "Assayer's" coin and have it linked as providence with the original letter. But I have not found anyone I trust to do this task. I am not sure even the major coin grader companies can do this. The coin has a quality value and a historical value. The two should always be linked. - Thomas

Dear Sap

Thank you. Actually I am all over Scott Balson's webpage and have communicated with him a few times. Most of the data on this coin deals with my family and Cooney's coin. It is such an odd coin that I am sure only a few collectors would find it interesting. The fact that perhaps only just over 500 were actually made, many turned into medals, many lost through time, that original verifiable coins like mine are all the more rare. Thank you kindly for the link and showing interest. - Thomas

I am very interested in the Boer and Zulu Wars, and any relics/coins from that time. Actually, I have been considering saving up for a (Very, Very low grade of course) 1902 Pond quite seriously (yes, I am aware that they are expensive.) PLease keep us posted and if you couls show us some pics that would be awesome.

Just follow these guidelines:

Uploading Images

Keep in mind, that the file size and minimum file name is key. Keep the name to something like VeldPondCoin and make sure it's a jpg and under 100kb in size by cropping and resizing.
