I agree with Becky. Looks like part of the 'S' chipped off and leaving you with a filled mint mark.

It is die wear, Machine Doubling and the effect of die chips in the openings of the S.

You can see the Machine Doubling on the B in the picture as well. 1955D and S dimes are notorious for being struck with dies that should have been removed from service much sooner.
