Hey guys I purchased a few coins off a guy on ebay , I originally bought this 1899s and a 1909s , so this seller and I messaged each other a few times and he mentioned the 1899 that's labeled as F12 doesn't have full liberty ... So he suggested he had a couple other lower grade semi key coin that he'd let me have cheap since I'd purchased the 1899 thinking it was fine 12 ... So this morning the 4 coin I purchased arrived , 3 of the 4 are around G04 and look like normal circulated dimes but right off thč bat this 1899 just didnt look right ... It's a much darker color then I though , but that's not what's making me question it ... The date looks off , the lettering on the obverse ... The reverse is really what convinced me as it's looks as if it's missing small details and just the overall look of the reverse .... Now I've collected Barber dimes for years and hŕve never came across a counterfeit that I knew of , this isn't a super rare date and it has been circulating for some time ... To me it just looks wrong !! Drew would you be so kind as to tell me if I have a fake dime or possibly shead some light on this for me ? Last photo is a diffetent barber just to compair

Looks like a cast copy. Details are completely off.

the details are also very mushy and crude.

It looks like a copy to me. Was it an ebay auction and paypal payment?

My only other thought is that it's a dug coin, and a lot of it was corroded away.

Edweather , I thought that might be a possibility also... What gets me though it the lettering just looks wrong and the details of the reverse really don't match , certain small details are not there .... I haven't removed it from the flip yet , but I will shortly and see what it weights and maybe stick a magnet to it .... I'm sure that the seller isn't intentionally selling fake coins as the other 3 are real , I think he just honestly didn't know .... I believe if I decided to return it , there wouldn't be a problem at all .... More than Likley this one just slipped past him , as he seems to be a good seller ! I don't have much in this coin maybe 5 bucks , what puzzles me a little is the fact that it's not a really rare date , lower mintage but not a key ! You never know though as I came across some fake common date buffalo nicks not long ago , could this possibly be a counterfeit that was made to be spent since a dime was a decent amount around 1899 rather than made to fool a collector ? For the past 4 years I've mainly stuck to collecting just Barber dimes and had never seen a counterfeit or if I did I didn't realize it was , so for that reason I might just hang on to it ....

Both sides look strange indeed, but I'll grant you it could be a dug coin.

Well guys it's a counterfeit , I weighted it this morning !! Also appears to be just a tad smaller than a real Barber dime ...

Yeah I tried a magnet and it didn't stick , the coin is only about half the weight of a heavily worn real barber ... Holding it side by side with a barber of a similar grade its just obvious it's not real ...
It's thinner and not as big around , even when comparing to a really worn coin ... It's a bit tougher to tell from the photos but once I removed it from the 2x2 it just really stuck out as not right , with the 9s in the date and the look of the letters of United States of America ...

I'm loving the counterfeit stuff turning up lately. If you could turn on your pm's I would like to chat more about this particular coin.
