I have a chance to get this 1913-S Type 2 Buff for around 75 bucks. It definitely has some damage, but has an original non-restored date and it's almost impossible to get an original 13-s T2 for that price. It does have the ugly scratch across the date but it's just really hard to beat that price.

As another option, I could get this coin for $118:

So what say you? Buy the first one for 75? Pony up for the nicer one for 118? Keep looking for better deals?

I'd rather take the $75 & the $118 and give to charity then to use it to buy any one of those buffaloes.
Rest in Peace

Save up and buy a nicer coin.
Also a quick ebay search shows the first coin with no bids at $45 probably would go for under $50 and I still would rather save and wait for a coin that I really like.
edited again to add that the first coin also looks to have a restored date. possible that the rest was added to cover that fact

I don't like either of those. No offense intended.

I think You will be happier in the long run if you bide your time & make a purchase you don't need to be talked into.

Yeah, I was already kinda leaning against the first one but I just wanted input.

The second one I really don't need to be talked into in terms of the coin. It's a nice original coin that looks as if it would get a clean grade and I'd be happy to have it in my collection. I've just never spent that much money on a coin before and I mostly wanted input on if it's a fair deal. It does compare favorably to several sold listings on ebay of coins in similar or worse shape, so I am really thinking hard about pulling the trigger.

Search through some dealers junk bins and you'll probably find one.

Especially helps if the dealer is over 65+

OP .... Think about your ultimate goal before pulling the trigger on these. IMHO. if you're just filling holes and have no goals for the set, say matching condition, full dates, eventual sale of the set, upgrading, then pull the trigger as you appear to be so inclined. Otherwise, wait for a better piece to come along ...

I pulled the trigger on one. Got this one for 75 bucks. Date is barely recognizable but I was able to make it out comfortably enough from the pics and the seller has 100% feedback and allows returns if I get it and am not satisfied.

I'm honestly shocked I got it for that price. I was really willing to go higher and threw that out as a first offer. I think it helped that the item was ending soon.

As for what my collecting goal is, it's to complete a Buffalo nickel set with merely identifiable coins that are in original condition and not acid dated. So I was mostly looking for the best price I could get on a coin in which I could make out the date. This one now completes my set. Can't wait until I get it in the mail!

Wow, if you can see the date on that one, you're a better man than I. Like you say, there's a return policy. If the date is actually visible, would it have a shot at P01? I don't think one exists yet in a PCGS slab.

A decent goal, that's what I did

Save your money and buy a decent coin. The best condition coins have the best chance to appreciate. The ones you are showing look like heck. To buy a coin with almost no date just does not make sense to me unless it is a very rare coin worth thousands. It has been said here many times to buy the best coins you can afford for your sets.

I would have gone for a better one, probably in the $150-$175 range.
Rest in Peace

I can't see a date on the coin you bought but if you're happy with it that's all that matters.

Could you post again after you get it and let us know how it looks in hand? Sometimes the dates are easier to see if you hold the coin at a bit of an angle.
