Hi
I have a couple questions on this coin.

On the reverse what causes the flattening (grease error?) like on the bottoms of the ES O?

I also put in a couple pics can you let me know it is MD or Die Deterioration or just normal?

Thanks

Are these things just from wear and MD?

Thanks

No they are from the die having grease on the die. A light amount of grease will leave the devices looking wider. The devices on the die are tapered with the narrowest part of the tops of the die. This way the coin will release after the strike. So as you pointed out the devices are wider. This is because of the struck through error (grease) you mentioned.

This is not coin wear as the other devices would also have been affected as well, but they are not. This area is also affected because of the strike of the bust area. But neither of these things are collectable. Just an issue during the strike and happens often.

Okay, yes I have seen that grease pattern a lot on the reverse but not so much on the obverse.

Thank you very much for your time.

I agree it happens more often on the reverse design, but the strongest greasers are typically on the obverse. Keep an eye out for one. Good luck Sandy!
