Which variety is this? The die crack doesn't match the ones in Charlton 2014 p.296-297. To me it looks like a flat back 9 straight 4 narrow date, but that isn't listed.

The Charlton 2014 George VI 50c Variety pages illustrate major varieties such as date digit positioning, double punches, different digit characteristics etc. If a die crack appears, it is because it shows up on the coin along with the major variety illustrated. There are at least 12 of the 32 reverse dies used that exhibit 'hoof to 1' die cracks. Yours is best described by the Zoell minor variety classified as F442s.

Would somebody normally just characterize this coin as "narrow date", or try to put it into a more specific major variety as is shown in Charlton? I suppose maybe it's just the "round 9 straight 4 narrow date". I have problems differentiating round 9 from flat 9 on some of my coins. This one also has a faint die clash in the upper crown.

I'm curious if there are any 1941 hoof in date, since there are so many hoof to 1 cracks.

kbbpll .... pginrh IS what's in Charlton as he wrote the variety section. Take whatever he says to the bank and deposit it in your grey matter.

>>I'm curious if there are any 1941 hoof in date, since there are so many hoof to 1 cracks.<<

To my knowledge there is no pronounced hoof 'over or in the 1' for the 1941. For those years where there is a large die chip or very wide die crack eg. 1944,1946,1949 or 1950 the hoof and the last date digit are in very close proximity on the die which probably creates a thin raised area of the die which along with the pointed hoof (stress prone) is ripe for a die chip to start. The 1941 has a large realtive distance between the '1' and the hoof which would not be prone to forming a die chip.
