Hey everyone. I need opinions please!

I have this 1 cent that I purchased as part of a lot. It was labeled as "struck on split planchet".

I don't have the weight so don't ask. I have a scale coming for Christmas so I will add the weight to this thread on Dec 25th. Lol

I think this might be an acid penny. It is thinner than normal(thinner could be split planchet). It is a smaller diameter than normal (not likely a split planchet because of the diameter). I don't think it is struck on a foreign planchet because I can't find any references to foreign coins struck at RCM in 1963.

So my conclusion is an acid penny. But it doesn't appear mushy or rippled like other acid pennies I have seen.

So what do you all think?

Thanks in advance!

The devices and rim have the look of an acid coin (as you said, except for the lack of that wavy look), but I've not seen enough split planchet coins to know how they look.

In my opinion what you got there is an acid treated penny. The tells are in the date and all devices, the devices have shrunken proportionately. Look at "1 cent" on the 63 vs the "1 cent" on the 1962. As well compare the "196" in the dates. You're going to want to return that one. I hope you didn't pay too much for it. Just my opinion, do what you feel you must.

I don't see how you're going to take 30% off the thickness of the coin with acid and still leave that much detail, but I have no idea what acid does to a coin. What I noticed first is how toothy the denticles are on the reverse.

Definitely acid.....most notable are the mushy denticles and slight waviness in the lettering. Acid has a tendency to reduce the thickness of the planchet while leaving the design relatively clear. As I have mentioned before on this forum, these acid treated coins have plagued our error hobby almost as much as the fake errors created by squeezing two coins together, such as in a vise.

Thanks for your replies. It is returnable because I bought it from a local dealer that I have dealt with before plus the holder clearly states that it is struck on a split planchet. Cheers!
