I am trying to find some information on early chartered banks in Canada.
I know that there was a St.Stephen's Bank for example. I have a cheque made out to it and I found it mentioned in a research paper at the UNB library but a google search just turns up modern banks in St. Stephen.
I also found the original building of the MAritime Bank of the DOminion of Canada in Woodstock and plan to start going through the town's library micro film to find old pictures and what not. In the same paper I was reading I discovered that that bank's main client was a bark processing plant in town.
Scotiabank has a "history" section that talks about their Jamaican history but only briefly. I want to try to find a connection to the end of slavery and Africville.
Surely someone has already done all this? When you guys have a question about early banks in Canada where do you guys turn?

Get the Charlton guide on Canadian paper money. Also, there are some good small write-ups on the banks that were on many of the early tokens issued/struck by the banks ... the book is Canadian Colonial Tokens, again one of the Charlton guides.

Ok, thank you okiecoiner. I will pick up a used paper money catalogue at the second hand book store.

Older paper money catalogues can give very useful summaries all in one volume. Also, most major banks have issued their history in book form, but they are pretty big reads - even though I own some, I haven't had a chance to read them yet, so I can't comment on their usefulness yet.
I just got home from one of our local shops and grabbed a few cheques, nothing too exciting though.

Look up Richard Stockley. He's a numismatic literature dealer in montreal who specializes in chartered bank history.

I would recommend The Charlton Standard Catalogue "Canadian Bank Notes" http://www.charltonpress.com/Numism...780889683631I have the 7th ed. and like it.. it's got a lot of good information on chartered banks and their history and which ones amalgamated... Also if you go to the bank of canada web site .. they have some downloadable pdf books.. that while they're not specific about chartered banks.. they do talk about how money was made.. the design... and such... which are also a pretty good read. http://www.bankofcanada.ca/publicat...venir-books/

Ok, so the catalogue is a must, I will pick one up.
I also found out William Teel Bard wrote an autobiography so I imagine it would talk about buying the old bank to open up a pharmacy. I will track that book book down too.
